Following the bittersweet victory of the Yom Kippur War and its difficult aftermath, the Rebbe sent Chassidim as his Shluchim to visit the soldiers and bring them encouragement. He instructed them to take coins with them, as gifts for the soldiers, so that they would have the ability to give Tzedakah even while in the army, where it is often difficult to fulfill this Mitzvah. Thereby, the Rebbe wrote, they would bring Hashem’s Berachos upon themselves. The first time the Rebbe spoke of Mivtza Tzedakah in public was on Yud Tes Kislev 5734. The Rebbe encouraged the Chassidim to make sure that each camp should have a Pushkah and then added that every home should as well have its own Pushkah.
